So you’ve decided that you need your own website. Now what?
You don’t have to be a tech wizard to use WordPress. I recommend WordPress to everyone I know who is looking to make themselves a website or a blog. If you choose a theme that you like right off the shelf and don’t need to change it at all, making a WordPress site is relatively straightforward. And, considering the vast array of options for themes, the chances of you finding a theme you like right out of the box is so much higher than the chance that you’ll love one of the templates that you find at a drag and drop site. You also really do not have to be technically savvy to be able to add pages or blog posts to a WordPress site.
If you are technically savvy, WordPress is still a great solution. You can customize a WordPress site in pretty much any way imaginable. You can go into the code and change everything from colors to layout to function. Or, if you’re really ambitious and have the skills, you could even build your own theme.
Many people fall somewhere in the middle of knowing nothing about websites and being a tech wizard. One of the fantastic things about WordPress is the incredible amount of support you can find online. You can get support from your premium theme, from the forums at www.wordpress.org, or any of a million different places. This helps the people who know enough to be dangerous but aren’t tech wizards to feel confident making changes themselves.
There are also an almost limitless number of plugins available for WordPress sites. Plugins will expand the functionality of your website and usually come with really easy to follow instructions on how to use them. For example, if you mostly love your theme, but you want a photo slider and it doesn’t come with one, you can download a slider plugin and add a slider to your site. And you can do this without knowing anything about how to code for a slider. (Even if you know how to code for one, it saves you the time and trouble of having to do it yourself since someone else already has.)
WordPress is perfect for people of any technical ability and produces a high quality website. That’s why I recommend it so highly. Even if you haven’t ever built a website before, you can get yourself started with a great looking site. But, if you want to learn more in the future, you won’t be limited by the capabilities of the site itself, but only by your own knowledge. Also, even if you start with a very simple and straightforward site, the possibilities for expanding it are there. You won’t have to start from scratch with a new website when your company grows.
